Welcome & thank you for your interest in our FREE food scrap diversion pilot program! This is an exciting moment for the residents in the City of Houston -- the opportunity to learn & be active participants in the cities Pledge to become a Zero Waste city by the year 2040!! Participants will be able to say they were true "pioneers" of food scraps (waste) diversion. So, let's get started. To participate in the City of Houston "Food Scraps to Compost" Curbside Pilot Program, please make sure that you read, follow and complete each and every one of the next steps.
Step 1: NO CONTAMINATION PLEDGE - It is very important that every participant reads and understands what contamination is and how to avoid it. Please click HERE to read the NO CONTAMINATION PLEDGE. During registration you will be asked to acknowledge that you have read and understand the pledge.
Step 2: REGISTER - To register for FREE click HERE. You will be prompted to fill out the required fields, including first and last name, address, phone number and e-mail address.
Step 3: SELECT YOUR CONTAINER - You are NOT required to purchase one of our collection buckets. You can use your own bucket or container. There are many ways you can collect & contain your food scraps; the most popular system people use is a small container in the kitchen, and a 5-gallon bucket sitting outside the house. If you are interested in purchasing our collection bucket you can directly from this website. It would be delivered on August 26th. Our buckets come with a screw-on lid that seals the smells in and is pest-proof. Again, you are not required to purchase our buckets, but can use your own bucket or container. Click HERE to go to our FAQ page and learn what containers to use.
Step 4: START DIVERTING - Learn about what you can or cannot put in your compost bucket HERE. Print and put on your refrigerator so the entire family can see.
Step 5: SAVE THE DATE - Once a week, starting Friday, August 26, 2022, Zero Waste Houston will pick up the food scraps from participating households. The program will last 16 weeks. The last pick up day will be Friday, December 16th, 2022.
