Soapweed (Yucca Glauca) – a perennial evergreen in the agave family that forms colonies & tall flower spikes with bell-like, white flowers that bloom in the summer.  

 

  • Growth: Can grow up to 2 - 3 feet tall.
  • Light: Thrives in full sun.
  • Soil: Thrives in well-drained, low-nutrient soil.
  • Hardiness: Cold hardy & deer resistant. Drought & wildfire tolerant.
  • Maintenance: Low maintenance. Requires adequate space due to its sharp leaves which can cut the skin. Pruning dead leaves in early spring encourages new growth.
  • Benefits: The plants provide nesting places for small animals, birds, & reptiles & the flowers attract butterflies & moths. Has historically been used for many things, including the bulbs being used for soap and roasted for food & having various medicinal properties. Helps control erosion.
